Our History

McWhorter Funeral Home is a family owned funeral home located in Gilmer, Texas. McWhorter Funeral Home is the first funeral home to be built in Gilmer in over 50 years. We are proud to be here to serve your family as if it was our own. We are committed to excellence and service in all aspects of funeral service.

    John McWhorter, Funeral Director, Owner

    John is a native of Pittsburg and is a 1988 graduate of Pittsburg High School. He then continued his education and graduated from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service in August 1993.   • Quentin Harston

    Quentin Harston, Funeral Director

    Quentin is a native of Gilmer, where he graduated from Gilmer High School in 2016. He then continued his education at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in General Business. While at SFA, Quentin enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard to help serve his country and be able to finish his degree. During the summer break of 2017, Quentin left to attend basic training at Ft. Jackson in South Carolina. He successfully completed basic training in September 2017 and came back to SFA to finish his degree. After graduating from SFA, he enrolled at Northeast Texas Community College to pursue a degree in Funeral Service. In 2022, Quentin graduated and finished his education, earning an Associate of Applied Science degree in Funeral Service. Quentin is married to Brittney, and they have one child together, Owen. Quentin enjoys helping others as a funeral director and playing golf in his spare time. 903-734-7070[email protected]

  • Leward LaFleur

    Leward LaFleur, Funeral Director

    Leward J. LaFleur was raised in White Oak, Texas. He attended White Oak I.S.D. as did his siblings, and his mother continues to teach at White Oak. Additionally, his grandfather, Ben Milam, served as the Athletic and Band booster president for over 30 years at WOISD.Leward left high school to serve his country with the United States Navy where he attended an accelerated High School program through the Department of the Interior.Upon graduating basic training as an honor recruit, Leward was stationed aboard the Guided Missile Destroyer USS LABOON (DDG-58), which was already underway for a Middle Eastern deployment. He later served on two other destroyers and went on deployment for an additional time serving aboard both the USS GONZALEZ (DDG-66) and the USS STOUT (DDG-55) in the Global War Against Terror. Leward was honorably discharged after his service as a decorated war veteran.After his service to our country, Leward attended college on his G.I. Bill and received an associate’s degree from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service where he received his license as a funeral director and embalmer.In 2016, Leward wanted to further serve his community, so he ran for elected office. Judge LaFleur now humbly and proudly serves as the County Judge for the people of Marion County.Recently, Judge LaFleur was inducted into the Texas Tech Judicial Academy as a Fellow of the Academy, a prestigious honor he has received for the second time. The Academy recognizes county judges as Fellows who attain significant judicial education beyond state requirements.Leward is married to Brooke Bradley-LaFleur and has two beautiful children Laney and Tripp. He is also an avid hunter and fisherman and loves all things outdoors.Leward says, "As a descendant of Col.
