Norman Orlando Chism

Funeral services for Norman Orlando Chism, 53, of Gilmer, will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with Reverend Dan Johnson officiating. Interment to follow at Zion Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm, Saturday, at McWhorter Funeral Home. Norman was born August 23, 1969, in Gladewater, Texas, to Norman and Gloria Chism and passed from this life July 20, 2023. Norman was a graduate of Gilmer High School in 1988. He worked 30 years at Pittsburg ISD and Goudarzi & Young later in life, until his health failed him. He was a lifelong member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He served on the following auxiliaries, Male Chorus, Usher Board, Trustee, Building Fund Committee Member, and Cemetery Committee. He was also a member of the Visions Excellence and Upshur County Juneteenth Committee. He was a beloved member of his community, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. He enjoyed fishing, working on the farm, and making people laugh. Norman most enjoyed playing with his great-nephews, and spending time with his family. He had a “Heart of God”. His favorite scripture was, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13. He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Chism; grandparents, Onie and Ozell Hargest, and Colia and Blancy Chism; and his aunt, Mary Hargest Slaughter. Those he leaves to cherish his memory are his mother, Gloria F. Chism; sister, Keisha Chism Bates; brother, Gregory Wilson; niece, Zaneta Ray; great-nephews, Legend and Legacy Swarn; uncles, Jewel Hargest, Ronald Slaughter (Pam), and Charles Chism (Wanda); aunts, Warnetta Askew (Raymond), Billie Brown, and Jerri Chism; and a host of relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Kendall Jackson, Roderick McKnight, Brandon Hollins, Damien Redditt, Carlos Crump, Terry Hawkins, Treyvonne McConnell, and Donta Harris.
