Memorial services for Lelon Rex Smith Jr., 70, of Ore City, Texas, will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 15, 2026, at McWhorter Funeral Home with Brother Billy Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm, one hour prior to the service. Rex was born on June 19, 1956, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Lelon Rex Smith Sr. and Betty Jo Kemp and passed peacefully from this life on August 1, 2026, surrounded by his three daughters. Rex joined the United States Navy shortly after his 18th birthday. He proudly served our country with honor from 1974 to 1978 during the Vietnam War era as a Machinist's Mate Third Class Petty Officer aboard the USS Albany (CG-10). Following his military service, he devoted his life to his family and friends. He was known for his ability to build and fix any and everything, his generosity, and his love for those closest to him. Whether someone needed a helping hand, a listening ear, or simply a visit, Rex was always willing to give of himself. He found his greatest joy in playing the guitar, sharing stories, and spending time with his family. He touched the lives of many, and his absence will be deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. The love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the countless memories he left behind will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Heather Steelman and husband Clint, Jessica Kelley and husband Guy, and Crystal Smith; his grandsons, Colton Steelman, Nolan Steelman, Cayden Steelman, and Guy Kelley IV; his siblings, Judy Ratcliff and husband JW “Buzz”, Becky Reaves, Angie Edwards and husband Tracy, Johnny “Bubba” Williams Jr. and wife Erica, Jeannie Pennington and husband Richard, and Debbie Reed; his mother-in-law, Frances Thomas; his brother-in-law, Taft Thomas and wife Kathleen; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tara (Thomas) Smith; his father, Lelon Rex Smith Sr.; his mother, Betty Jo (Kemp) Williams; his stepfather, Johnny Williams Sr.; his sister, Pat Temple; his father-in-law, Huey Thomas; and his brother-in-law, Tim Thomas. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, love, and support during this difficult time.
